What is railcar and how it is changing with the developing cutting-edge technology?

If you've ever sat at a railroad crossing and watched the train go by, you've probably noticed how many different rail cars there are (and no, we're not talking about the graffiti).

That's because the days of "one-size-fits-all" freight shipping are long gone, and rail yards are no exception. Every day, hundreds, if not thousands, of different types of cargo are transported, and many of them necessitate the use of specialized vehicles.

While there are dozens of cars with unique designs, we'll go over the eight most common types used in rail freight shipping today.

A boxcar will come to mind when you think of a train car. This is because boxcars are the gold standard of rail freight, constituting the majority of many trains. Boxcars have a solid roof and sliding doors in the center of each side, making palletized goods and other bulk items easy to load and unload.

The following are examples of common boxcar freight:

Consumer packaged goods

 Auto parts

Paper reams

Canned goods

Bagged products

HOPPER CARS

Unlike boxcars, hoppers are specifically designed to transport loose, unpalletized commodities. They are typically loaded from the top and have doors on the side or underbelly to dump their cargo. There are two types of hoppers: covered and open-top. Covered hoppers have a roof and are best for free-flowing commodities, whereas open-top hoppers, as the name implies, are best for products that aren't likely to be affected by the elements.

FLATCARS

Flatcars are distinguished by their flat, open deck, which is typically made of wood or steel. They are primarily intended for transporting cargo that is unusually large, long, or irregular in shape. For added support, some flatcars have bulkheads (end walls), center beams, and tie-down points. Flatcars are a common mode of intermodal freight due to their open design.

TANK CARS

Tank cars, also known as tankers, are vehicles designed to transport liquid and gas commodities. Tank cars are long, cylindrical tubes with a loading valve on top and a dispensing drain on the bottom. They can be lined with steel, glass, plastic, or another material depending on their contents.

GONDOLAS

Gondolas are open-topped rail cars with low sidewalls that are ideal for transporting higher-density bulk cargo. Gondolas, unlike open-topped hoppers, lack side or bottom release doors, requiring cargo to be manually unloaded from the top.

COIL CARS

Coil cars, despite their resemblance to tankers, are a subset of gondolas. Their cylindrical shape makes them ideal for transporting coil-shaped products, hence the name. After loading, coil cars can be left open or fitted with a metal "hood" to cover and secure the cargo.

REFRIGERATOR CARS

Refrigerator cars, or "reefers" for short, contain a specialized cooling apparatus designed to keep the cargo at a specific temperature. These climate-controlled vehicles are ideal for frozen and perishable food items, and they are frequently delivered to cold storage facilities across the country.
